Right to Rock: The Black Rock Coalition and the Cultural Politics of Race
The original architects of rock 'n roll were black musicians, but by the 1980s, rock music produced by African Americans was no longer "authentically black." Mahon offers an in-depth account of how, since 1985, members of the Black Rock Coalition have broadened understandings of black identity and culture through rock music.

Music history of the United States (1980s to the present) - The 1980s saw New Wave entering the year as the single biggest mainstream market, with heavy metal, punk rock and hardcore punk, and hip hop achieving increased crossover success. With the demise of punk rock, a new generation of punk-influenced genres arose, including Gothic rock, post-punk, alternative rock, emo and thrash metal.

Alternative rock - The terms alternative rock and alternative music were coined in the early 1980s to describe punk rock-inspired music genres which didn't fit into the mainstream genres of the time. At times it was used as catch-all phrase for rock music from underground artists in the 1980s and rock music in general in the 1990s and 2000s.

Noise rock - Noise rock is a musical genre that developed in the 1980s as an experimental outgrowth of punk rock. Fusing punk rock's attitude with the atonal noise and unconventional song structures of early industrial and noise music, the noise rock introduced a new kind of avant-garde music to the alternative rock landscape.

Modern rock - Modern rock is a phrase commonly used by radio stations to describe rock music styles that are commonly found on mainstream radio stations, generally beginning with late 1970s punk but referring especially to any rock music of the 1980s, 1990s or 2000s, mainly to differentiate the format from "classic rock", which focused upon music recorded in the 1960s and 1970s. More specifically, it is usually used to describe a "radio-friendly" variation of alternative rock (see post-grunge).
